What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is a condition in that gut that causes weight loss, anemia, and gut inflammation. The etiology is an immune response from gluten (a protein found in wheat and some other grains). Although the exact trigger of Celiac disease is unknown, there is a gene that genetically predisposes certain people to Celiac disease. Currently over 3 million Americans struggle with Celiac Disease.

What are the Symptoms of Celiac Disease?

The most common symptoms of Celiac Disease are chronic diarrhea and weight loss. Children often present with a swollen abdomen. However, symptoms vary greatly from person to person. Some people do not have severe digestive symptoms, but have other symptoms like anxiety or joint pain.


Other common symptoms are:

  • Iron deficiency
  • Osteoporosis
  • Rashes/skin issues
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Numbness in extremities
  • Joint pain
  • Acid reflux and heartburn
  • Constipation or other bowel issues

Celiac Disease Diet:

With celiac disease many people find that going gluten free does not fully clear up their symptoms. This is due to cross-reactivity with other foods that may be contaminated with gluten, and continue to contribute to leaky gut issues. Another factor is that some foods are similar in molecular structure as gluten, and create the same antibodies in some people. This is known as “molecular mimicry.”
Many people with celiac disease find that following a “gluten free” diet usually still leaves them still feeling terrible. This is because gluten free dietary recommendations usually involve processed foods such as cereals, soy, bad oils, and refined sugar. Although these grains are gluten free, they still keep the individual on a “blood sugar rollercoaster” and still struggling with inflammation and leaky gut. Often times gluten free products contain higher amounts of sugar then the gluten containing ones.
